AstraZeneca Vaccine

Dear Patient:

By now, you may have heard that the provincial government has put a pause on new first doses of Astra Zeneca. I wanted to reach out to address questions and concerns that you might have.

Firstly, at the time you received your Astra Zeneca COVID-19 vaccine, you did the right thing. We were facing significantly rising COVID cases and insecure vaccine supply. Moreover, experts agreed that the first vaccine available to you was the vaccine that was best for Ontarians in such a landscape, and you received an effective vaccine to protect you against the risks of severe illness, ICU admission and death.

Now to answer the question on everyone's minds - what happens with my second dose? At present, you have a second dose appointment time booked with our office. In fact, early data from the United Kingdom suggests the risk of blood clot with a second dose of Astra Zeneca/COVISHIELD is likely lower than after first doses.

At present we have been informed by the Ministry of Health that individuals who have received their first dose of the AstraZeneca Vaccine will have two options:

  1. Proceed as scheduled and receive the second dose of AstraZeneca

  2. Wait to choose which vaccine you will receive at your second dose as more information on mixed vaccine series is available (ie. Is receiving a first dose of AstraZeneca and a second dose of Moderna 16 weeks later)

Thanking you for your time and wishing you the very best of health,

Your health care team at Nith Valley Family Practice.
